LEVERAGING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

Stunning players and spectators, Quince Imaging transformed the scenery with seamless arena-wide projection effects. The 11-person team from Quince executed the client’s vision, projecting 3D forced perspective content on a custom-designed set that would be the focus of thousands of cheering esports fans.

All eyes were on Chicago as Quince Imaging efficiently turned Riot Games’ groundbreaking vision into reality by integrating projection mapping with 3D scenic and LED elements to create a robust canvas for the designers.

Technology and Equipment Used:

  • Light analysis with comprehensive programming and integration between house LED, projection, and production LED systems
  • 3D modeling, scale mockups, pre-visualization, and implementation utilizing 18 Panasonic PT-RQ35K projectors.
  • Screen control utilizing four Disguise Pro vx 4+ media servers.
  • Ventuz V6 real-time graphics for real-time effects and data integration.

Using the Disguise pre-visualization tool Mapping Matter, in tandem with Quince Imaging’s pre-production tools & production CAD, helped ensure a timely turnaround within a tight schedule.

Quince Imaging worked closely with Scenic Designer Joseph Kale to design a set to fit within the projection field, including testing the construction materials for optimal gain. This process was critical to ensure the brightness and clarity of the projection needed for a vivid representation during the live broadcast.

IMPRESSIVE RESULTS

Working around the 200-foot-long x 85-foot-wide 3D scenic environment to map and align all the 3D faces without shadows or distortion, Quince Imaging brought Riot’s vision to life in front of a 20,000-person live audience and countless spectators watching from around the world. Despite the structure consisting of multiple types of materials, the team created a seamless canvas for the design team using disguise to calibrate the brightness for each projection surface and LED canvas.

To achieve the best projection display, the team carefully coordinated all aspects of design and installation with Riot Games’ creative team led by Creative Director Justin Restaino, the opening ceremony team at Histeria!, and the LCS’s in-house designers. The state-of-the-art production was a smash hit, with credit owed to Riot Games’ animations and designs and the strong working relationship formed over the past five years between Riot Games and Quince Imaging.

The 2022 LCS Championship was a testament to the rapidly growing esports industry. With the help of Quince Imaging, the tournament set a new standard for production quality, elevating the League of Legends competition to new heights.
