To elevate the Miami HEAT Ring Ceremony, Quince Imaging delivered a groundbreaking basketball court projection mapping experience that transformed the basketball floor into a dynamic, three-dimensional storytelling surface. By projecting imagery directly onto key court elements, such as the three-point arc and foul lines, and animating them in place, the technology created the illusion of depth and movement, giving fans a realistic 3D viewing experience inside the arena.
This approach pushed beyond traditional flat graphics, allowing the court itself to become an active visual element during one of the most meaningful moments in franchise history.
Technology & Implementation
Executing court projection mapping in a brightly lit NBA arena required a highly engineered solution designed for precision, brightness, and synchronization.
System Hardware
Quince Imaging deployed a custom-engineered system of high-performance media servers and high-brightness projectors to deliver virtual 4K resolution (3610 × 1920) across the full basketball court pixel space. This ensured crisp visuals and accurate alignment despite challenging ambient lighting conditions.
Synchronization & Control
The projection system was fully synchronized with the arena’s LED displays and automated lighting systems, using control protocols such as Art-Net and TCP-based communication. This allowed court visuals, lighting cues, and in-arena displays to operate as a unified show system.
Dynamic, Real-Time Content
Advanced media server workflows enabled 3D graphics to integrate live with video feeds and 2D design elements. This flexibility allowed content to be updated and adjusted in real time; supporting live ceremonies, timing changes, and broadcast requirements without disrupting the experience.

The success of the Miami HEAT Ring Ceremony marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of NBA game presentation technology. Following the 2013 ceremony, multiple teams adopted court projection mapping as a regular part of their in-game presentation.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers became the first franchises to deploy image-mapped courts on a nightly basis beginning in the 2014–15 NBA season.
Building on this momentum, Quince Imaging later collaborated with Visual Concepts to design digital court projection visuals for all 30 NBA teams in the video game NBA 2K17, extending the influence of projection-mapped courts from live arenas into interactive digital environments.
