Historic Carolina Theatre Reopens
After eight years of meticulous restoration, the historic Carolina Theatre at Belk Place has officially reopened—blending the grandeur of its 1927 origins with cutting-edge immersive technology. Quince Imaging partnered with Foundation for the Carolinas to design and integrate a custom AV system that redefines the venue’s capabilities, transforming it into a modern civic hub and performing arts center. From interactive projection mapping to seamless content delivery, Quince Imaging’s design enhances both the theatre’s architectural legacy and its future as a destination for unforgettable experiences.
A HISTORIC THEATRE REBORN
Spanning 36,000 square feet, the revitalized Carolina Theatre now serves as a flexible venue for concerts, theatrical productions, town halls, panel discussions, and multimedia events. To accommodate this range of programming, Quince Imaging designed and integrated a versatile AV environment that includes high-impact projection mapping, theatrical lighting, professional audio systems, and advanced control infrastructure.
At the center of the system is a custom projection-mapped installation, which transforms the theatre’s proscenium and interior walls into an immersive digital canvas. Developed in collaboration with the creative team at Uncommon, the content spans animated storytelling sequences and interactive civic programming—all tailored to engage diverse audiences.
TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE EXPERIENCE
The projection system features six Christie RGB laser projectors, installed in a blended remote-head configuration—what Quince Imaging calls the world’s first of its kind. This setup delivers seamless, high-resolution imagery across the full width of the theater.
By activating not just the stage but the entire environment, the system moves beyond traditional LED-based backdrops—turning the walls, ceiling, and architectural features into active storytelling surfaces.
This system merges the grandeur of proscenium projection, on par with venues like Radio City Music Hall, with the real-time responsiveness of today’s location-based entertainment,” said Eric Gazzillo, VP at Quince Imaging. “It places the audience at the center of the experience—whether they’re watching a world-class performance or participating in a community forum.
IMPRESSIVE RESULTS
Quince Imaging’s involvement spans nearly four years of design and system development, and four years of construction, culminating in the successful commissioning of a solution that respects the theatre’s historic charm while embracing the future of immersive storytelling.
With its doors now open, the Carolina Theatre stands once again as a beacon of creativity, culture, and innovation—ready to inspire a new generation.
Being part of the Carolina Theatre’s revival has been one of the most meaningful projects in our company’s history,” said Gazzillo. “We’re proud to have contributed to bringing this cultural landmark back to life.
