The changing of the leaves, the crisp mornings, the smell in the air... there's no doubt about it: Fall is here! What's that? Snow you say? Yes it would seem that winter weather has certainly crept its way in -- just as early as the holiday store promotions and ads this year. I'm sure this made the retailers jump for joy, but the rest of us would like to at least get through Halloween and maybe even Thanksgiving before having to think about digging ourselves out of our homes!

So, hopefully not too many Halloween plans for this evening were compromised very badly due to the weather. If those plans have been changed, due to unforeseen forces of nature, share your story and pictures with us either on Facebook or by email. For those that do, we will send you a Quince Treat for your troubles.

Happy Halloween and we give thanks, now and at our Quince Thanksgiving table, to all of you that we have had the opportunity to meet and work with in the past, present and the future!

The New Buyer Paradigm

Over the last decade, we have experienced a dramatic shift in how people view themselves on the buying side of a transaction. The perspective that big companies were more stable and trustworthy has been replaced with the sentiment that big companies are selfish and unreliable. The buy-it-now-and-pay-later mentality has been replaced with focusing on getting only what you need and saving more. Bragging about how expensive it was, has now been replaced with bragging about how great a deal you’ve found. Impulse buying has been replaced with researching various options and reviews before deciding to try it.

Is this shift due to the current economy? Although the economy has certainly been a major catalyst, this shift has more to do with how sellers relate to their customers. Shifts like this are more cultural and tend to affect buyer behavior for an entire generation. So, even when the economy improves, these buying behaviors will remain with our generation for a lifetime.

So what does this mean for our industry in terms of finding new customers as well as retaining our current ones? Well, once you begin to understand that your “tried and true” sales and marketing strategies may never work again (even when the economy improves), you can start to effectively revise your approach. The knee-jerk reaction is to search for the new “catch all” mass marketing channel – which most people have falsely classified social media – and redirect the same strategies down this channel. Social media is a great new marketing tool, however your old sales and marketing approach will not work effectively in social media. Social media is more about the one on one perspective and experience. Mass marketing in the traditional sense is quickly dying. A full-page ad in your industry magazine or directory just doesn’t offer the same ROI anymore. At the same time, getting more Facebook fans, Twitter followers or YouTube views doesn’t necessarily turn into revenue.

The key to evolving with this new generation of buying behavior is understanding that you have to spend more time earning trust with the prospects and customers you are already reaching instead of spending time blanketing your company logo everywhere. You must prove that you are the “real deal” before you are even given a shot. Customers now expect you to take the time to earn their trust, and if you don’t, they will move on before they ever do business with you. You must engage customers and prospects on a deeper level to determine their motivations and needs. Openly and publicly provide information that addresses these points while resisting the temptation to turn it into a sales pitch. Then, over time you can build and strengthen your credibility and relationships in more of a direct way.

Is this a new strategy? It’s absolutely not. Direct response marketing has been around for decades. The new paradigm isn’t that this strategy suddenly works, but instead, that the old ways of doing things no longer work without it.

Questions for the Q-Ru Fall

 How is Projection Done?

Q-Ru,

Where would I find information about projection and how it's done?

                                                                                                                Thanks,

                                                                                                                 Stephen G.

Stephen,

Well, that is an interesting question. Finding “how to” information regarding projection is an involved process. In my decades of experience, I have yet to find a textbook or training seminar that is thorough, accurate, informative and applicable to today’s technology. One of the GREAT SECRETS of our industry is that there is no easy way to develop the skills and expertise to be consistently successful at projecting imagery in a wide variety of applications. The collective Quince Imaging knowledge has been gained through extensive experimentation, experience and study of what actually occurs between projection system and viewer.

With the emergence of a new market segment of projection image mapping, there are more and more seminars and lectures (LDI, InfoComm, NAB) that review the use of projection in these unique environments from a wide variety of perspectives. Based on where your interests lie, one of these industry gatherings would be a great resource to begin your knowledge quest. Quince Imaging also hosts a variety of demo and training events for their clients, vendors and industry colleagues. Check their website and social media pages regularly to catch the announcements for any upcoming events they may be hosting in the future.

   Sincerely,

  • How would you describe your primary role at/with Quince Imaging?  Inventory Control, Warehouse Manager, Driver.

I have to know where every piece of gear we own is at any given moment as well as keep the warehouse organized. I assist our technicians in pulling and preparing for upcoming shows, and when the need arises, I deliver all equipment to the show sites.

  • What is your favorite part of working at/with Quince Imaging?  I really just enjoy playing my part and working with a team of competent individuals that have a similar perspective on working towards perfection.
  • Describe one of the most challenging projects you have worked on for/with Quince Imaging?  Implementing a logical inventory control system was difficult. Labeling all equipment with an asset number that is used for computer tracking of gears use and performance.Jason G. Firespinning
  • When you are not at work, what are you most likely to be found doing?  I enjoy making music in my Reston home recording studio, or working with my fire dance team performing for local parties.
  • Who has been an inspiration to you in your life?  In all seriousness, I could just about pick one for every area of personal interest, but if only one, I’d have to say John Gorka, a down to earth singer songwriter who has taught me anything is possible and that if I want to see a dream realized, I need only wake up and start reaching for it.
  • What is your favorite place in the world to visit?  Boulder, Co
  • If you could have any superpower, what would it be?  Time control would certainly help me empty my inbox more frequently.
  • If you could meet any person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?  People are people; we are all multifaceted gems waiting for someone that gets us to talk to. So, I want to meet everyone interesting. Specifically, no one and indirectly anyone willing to have deeper than surface conversations.
  • Finally, if you were free from the laws of physics and could design a new projector or display device, what would it do and what would you name it?   I’d like to see a projector capable of holding a focused image on the surface of moving water, so it would have to take laser distance readings at lightning speed and auto focus accordingly, and water would have to develop some gain qualities.  I’d call it a flowjector.
